HIV/AIDS Education in India

In early 2009, Action against Aids Germany went on a fact-finding mission to India to get a personal picture of the situation of HIV-positive people on the ground.

HIV/AIDS Eduation in the Big Cities of India

In early 2009, Action against Aids Germany went on a fact-finding mission to Bangalore, a metropolis in India, to get a personal picture of the situation of HIV-positive people on the ground.

Public Antiretroviral Treatment Centers (ART) in India provide the medicines free of charge. Nevertheless, most people have no access to the lifesaving medications for reasons of discrimination and because of the stigma associated with HIV/Aids. In addition, the local authorities ban sex education in public schools.

The NGO MILANA works on site with poorer people to improve the situation. In our movie, Dr. Christiane Fischer interviewed Jyoti Kiran, associate of  MILANA, about their work, the current situation and prospects of their NGOs given the global financial crisis.

HIV/AIDS Education in the Rural Areas of India

 

In early 2009, Action against Aids Germany went on a fact-finding mission to India to get a personal picture of the situation of HIV-positive people on the ground.

The Adivasi, the indigenous population of India, live in the region Sittilingi in Tamil Dau, South India. The "Tribal Health Initiative" in Sittlingi runs a hospital there for the Adivasi. Only recently the hospital is became a a state counseling and testing center for HIV/Aids.

Dr. Christiane Fischer interviewed Dr. Reji George, physician of the hospital, about the difficulties facing him when educating the local population about HIV/Aids.

According to WHO estimates, 2.5 million people in India live with HIV/Aids. Unofficial estimates of the NGOs on the other hand presume that up to 20 million people are infected. That represents about 2% of the population.
