    • In March 2009, ten delegates of Action against AIDS Germany including three international guests visited India to meet four generic companies (Cipla, Hetero, Aurobindo and Matrix) that produce first and second line generic antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) and members of civil society groups (Lawyers Collective, Alternative Law Forum, MILANA, LOCOST, All India Drug Action Network).
  • Advanced Market Commitments - Current Realities and Alternate Approaches
    • The purpose of an advanced market commitment (AMC) was to motivate research and development (R&D) based pharmaceutical companies to conduct research into the so called ‘neglected diseases’ that primarily afflict low-income countries. In addition, AMCs were to speed-up access to new vaccines that are often delayed by 10-15 years because of their high prices when new on the market.

  • The Medicines Patent Pool Initiative by UNITAID
    • UNITAID is working to establish an international system boost the availability of new and more patient-friendly medicines for people in developing countries. Through a collective management structure for medicines patents, known as a patent pool, UNITAID seeks to improve access to patents and foster the development and production of life-saving, more affordable, and more suitable medicines. Although such a ‘pool’ structure has shown its worth in many areas – agriculture and information technology, for example - the UNITAID initiative will lead to the first patentpool for medicines.
